February 24, 2006, Newsletter Issue #35: How Recruiters Are Paid

Tip of the Week

Contingency firms are paid when the candidate is hired, while retained firms are paid in increments, beginning with a portion of the total fee upon starting the search, a portion after a month, and the remainder upon completion. If the search is halted for some reason in mid-process, the portion of the fee that has already been paid is not refunded. Contingency recruiters, because of when the fee is paid, usually handle everything by phone (with some exceptions) and if the placement is not completed, the contingency recruiter isnít paid at all. Predictably, this can make for some questionable behavior.
